Not a very usefull comment on high loads maybe connected with httpd: I have noticed in the past, that when I go into the router over webinterface, the load goes ans stays up to something like 0,3. It dies down slowly to the normal low values I see.

Good example is what I've tried right now: I got in, first time in some days, the load was very low. (0.00, 0.00, 0.00). But right now, while I have the page open, it is 0.44, 0.16, 0.05. So all the load has started when I logged on via http.

This happens every time. No other exciting things are done with the box; 1-2 wlan clients, 1 wired. QoS is on, no p2p at all.

WRT54GL Firmware: DD-WRT v23 SP1 Final (05/30/06) mini
Time: 12:08:47 up 13 days, 15:49, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00.

Maybe this sheds a little light.

WRTbwlog uses quite a bit CPU power acording to my readings. If you are using it - that may be the reason.

For me, whenever the info page of the router is up, the httpd process is pretty high. Also, snmpd and syslogd, and klogd are all also high on the list when using the connection.

BS, what is the "dropbear" process. It never gets really out of control, but it is always hanging around the upper levels in the top chart. Thanks.

So basically for me, when actually using my connection, the following things get high in CPU% in no partcular order:

syslogd
klogd
snmpd
ksoftirqd_CPU0
wland
dropbear

httpd (when activated)
top (when running)

Others can post their top hogging processes as well.

Yes - I know that many things can make high load. But I just compare 2 routers - first one is WRT54GL v1.1 which is my home router for my 2 PCs and VoIp adapter (PAP2) so load should be small, and second one is WRT54G v3 used by about 10 wired clients and 10 wireless. And with exactly the same firmware WRT54G keeps load at about 0.1-0.2 when used and at 0.0 when used lightly (at nights). At the same time my WRT54GL starts with 0.0 but then after 1-2 days has about 2.0 and main problem is httpd which is used few times a day only to check load. And that's all with FWs starting from 26/06. I used many earlier FWs on both routers and they all worked well on both of them. I hope you get it now.

From what I've seen, the high load is caused by the httpd-server. It puzzeled me too at first.

I remember maybe a couple months back trying a couple builds where http process would start eating cpu like that after running a couple days. Do you have https enabled, I want to say disabling it was what made the difference on mine.. but its been a while now..

I never really realized how much CPU using syslog actually takes. This is especially true when doing any P2P (worst probably with Bittorrent, especially with DHT). The CPU usage for syslogd at one point was 50%, and the highest thing on the list Shocked

3 hours ago all was OK (load average 0.00, 0.00, 0.00). Only VoIP adapter was running since I was at work.

HTTPD is used only to check load every few hours. It's configured to for HTTP/HTTPS on LAN annd HTTPS on WAN.

Last good FW for me was from 22/06. Then I tried FW from 26/06 and later builds. All have the same thing. I've tried standard and VPN version (but never used vpn client or server).

Syslog is disabled.

looks like someone is constantly polling the http server. or just watching the statistics. this will take the cpu power

It's only me who can do this. But I check load only every few hours. Whole site is password-protected (also Info page) so there is no chance that someone is pooling HTTP server all the time. Or maybe someone tries to hack my router? How to check it?

And maiin question is why it doesn't happen on FW up to 22/06? Smile
